The effect of roadway configurations on the dispersion of traffic-related pollution: a wind tunnel study
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we examine the effect of different roadway configurations, including noise barriers and roadway elevation or depression relative to the surrounding terrain, on the dispersion of traffic-related pollutants for winds perpendicular to the roadway. A wind tunnel experiment modeling 12 different configurations was performed to study the flow fields and the concentration distributions resulting from emissions from a simulated six-lane highway. All of the configurations examined here reduced the downwind ground-level concentrations relative to that for a flat, unobstructed roadway; however, the degree to which the concentrations were reduced varied widely depending on the particular situation. These experiments confirm the utility of the vertical entrainment velocity in characterizing the rate of concentration decrease with downwind distance from the road. This parameter previously has been found useful in modeling ground-level releases and has been used particularly in hazardous release models. Ground-level concentration data from the cases considered in this research indicate that a constant entrainment velocity can be used over the region beginning downwind of any initial disturbance to the flow resulting from the roadway

Quantifying the impact of traffic-related air pollution on the indoor air quality of a naturally ventilated building.
Improper natural ventilation practices may deteriorate indoor air quality when in close proximity to roadways, although the intention is often to reduce energy consumption. In this study, we employed a CFD-based air quality model to quantify the impact of traffic-related air pollution on the indoor air quality of a naturally ventilated building. Our study found that the building envelope restri...

The aim of this study is to investigate the problems caused by discharge of polluted air from tunnels into the environment with a specific focus on residential areas. In city tunnels, portal or stacks, pollutant management is a big challenge. Nowadays, air quality management, particularly in urban tunnels, is considered as a part of the ventilation system design. The goal is to see the environm...
متن کاملEffect of Wing Sweep Angle on the Vortex Interaction of a Tail-Wing Configuration
The goal of this investigation is to study the effect of wing sweep angle on the horizontal wing-body- tail configurations in subsonic flow. For this purpose, a series of wind tunnel tests were conducted on a model having a moveable horizontal tail and a wing planform with different sweep angles. Tests were performed at different tail deflection angles. Static surface pressure distribution over...
متن کاملEstimation of Reconstruction Cost and Traffic Functionality Relating to Roadway Transportation Lifelines after Natural Disasters
Earthquakes are among those natural hazards which may lead to disruption in the function of arterial traffic routes. Road networks are particularly vulnerable, due to their geographical dispersion, extensive functions and structural reliance on favourable geophysical conditions. Traffic functionality after a natural disaster and the repair/rehabilitation cost of roads are crucial considerations...
متن کاملEffects of Roadway and Traffic Characteristics on Accidents Frequency at City Entrance Zone
More than 60% of accidents in Iran occur within 30 kilometers of cities entrance roads. Therefore the number of accidents per kilometer in these regions, in contrast to the other parts of roads is very considerable. The city of Tehran, as the capital of Iran, is the cross point of major arterials of passenger and freight transportation. Thus the evaluation of road safety, entering and exiting t...
